LETU Classroom Technology Standards

The purpose of classroom technology is to provide a simple and consistent mechanism for faculty and students to share information by means of video and audio.  Each classroom shall consist of two main components: Instructor Lectern and Display Module.  Both elements and their connections will be detailed below:

 - Instructor Lectern - Each lectern will permanently mount all necessary equipment for each instructor to interact with the room AV technology in a centralized place.  The technology complement for each lectern shall include the following:

  • Confidence/Privacy Monitor - each lectern shall have mounted a 2X" Dell monitor mounted for instructor confidence/privacy screen.  It will be connected to the classroom PC mounted in the lectern and serve as the primary monitor
  • Classroom PC - each lectern shall mount a small form factor Dell PC to serve as the primary presentation device for the classroom.  Each PC shall include an Nvidia graphics card with dual output capability using, at minimum, HDMI and VGA formatted connections.  Each computer shall connect to a primary display for the instructor using the VGA output and connect to the projection system using the HDMI output. (1) active network connection will be required for this device and serve as cable (1 of X) forming the Lectern Umbilical.
  • Input Devices - each lectern shall provide a wired USB keyboard and wired USB mouse for instructor interaction with the classroom pc.  A wireless usb presentation remote will be stored in each lectern to allow the instructor freedom of movement while presenting  to the class.
  • Input connections - Each lectern shall provide (1) HDMI input to be permanently used for the classroom pc, (1) HDMI input as an auxiliary connection, and (1) VGA input as an auxiliary connection.  Both auxiliary connections shall be mounted in a single-gang plate in the lectern.  The classroom will use a direct connection to the video equipment.
  • Control Panel - Each lectern shall have mounted an Extron MLC Pro 100 control interface in a two-gang cut in hole.  This panel will include functions for switching inputs, adjusting the volume level, and powering on the projector.  This unit is also the main processing unit for room control.  It shall be used to control the main video switcher and classroom projector via RS-232.  (1) active network connection will be required for this device and will serve as cable (2 of X) forming the Lectern Umbilical.  The volume control will be connected the audio amplifier using West Penn #452 cable  to allow for adjustments to the overall room volume.  This will serve as cable (3 of X) forming the Lectern Umbilical.
  • Video Switcher - Each lectern will mount an Extron DTP USW 233 digital video switcher.  Connections from the Classroom PC and Input connections plate will be terminated and connected directly to this device.  (2) RS-232 signals shall be connected to this device.  The first shall serve as the control signal for the switcher.  The second is to be connected and transmitted via DTP CAT-6 cable to serve as the control connection to the Classroom Projector.  Each switcher shall have terminated and connected, (1) Extron DTP digital video cable which will serve as cable (4 of X) forming the Lectern Umbilical.
  • Power Conditioner - Each lectern shall be fitted with a Furman Power conditioner connected to a duplex outlet provided by the LETU electrician.  Each device mounted in the podium requiring power shall be connected to this device.  This cable will serve as cable (5 of X) forming the Lectern Umbilical.
  • Lectern Umbilical - each lectern will effectively have a unified cable connecting it to the other auxiliary room components. This "umbilical" will supply  (1) 120VAC, minimum (2) active LAN connections, minimum of (2) RS-232 control cables, and (1) Extron digital video cable. The specifications for each of those connections is detailed below.
    • 120VAC Grounded Circuit - (1) 120V grounded circuit terminated with (1) grounded duplex outlet mounted in the interior of the lectern. (if code allows, the idea would be that this would require the podiums to be a permanent fixture in the room.  Until that permanent solution can be enacted, each podium shall have the power portion of its umbilical terminated to (1) male US power connector with a 15' whip.)
    • Active LAN Connections - (2) Cat-6 cables terminated with (2) female RJ-45 connectors mounted in a single-gang dual port Decora mounting system. (if code allows, the idea would be that this would require the podiums to be a permanent fixture in the room.  Until that permanent solution can be enacted, each podium shall have the network portion(s) of its umbilical terminated to (1) male RJ-45 connector  plug with a 15' whip.)
    • RS-232 Cables - minimum of (2) West Penn 452 #22/2 shielded cables. These will be bare-wire terminated using Extron block connectors into the MLC Pro 100 unit's termination block.  (if code allows, the idea would be that this termination would be done at each respective endpoint. i.e. receiver balun, data closets, breaker box, projectors, amplifiers.  This would require the podiums to be a permanent fixture in the room.  Until that permanent solution can be enacted, each podium shall have the RS-232 portion of its umbilical terminated to (2) Extron male plugs with a 15' whip.)
    • Extron Digital Video Cable - (1) Extron DTP shielded twisted pair digital video cable.  This cable shall be terminated with (1) male shielded RJ-45 connector. Each termination shall allow for 2' of extra coiled into 8" diameter coils secured to the interior wall of the podium with a strain relief in place for the connection to the Video Swticher. (If code allows, the idea would be that this would require the podiums to be a permanent fixture in the room.  Until that permanent solution can be enacted, each podium shall have the power portion of its umbilical terminated to (1) Extron DTP shielded RJ-45 connector with a 15' whip.)

- Display Module - The display module shall contain all necessary components to display video and reinforce the audio. It will serve as the termination point for the aforementioned Lectern Umbilical.  The components and the connections contained in this module will be detailed in the following:

  • Ceiling Mounted Projector - each display module shall mount (1) Epson Projector using a Chief Manufacturing ceiling projector mounting system to be detailed below.  Each projector will have need for (1) HDMI connection and (1) RS-232 control port.
  • Ceiling Mounted Projector - each display module shall mount (1) Epson Projector using a Chief Manufacturing ceiling projector mounting system to be detailed below.  Each projector will have need for (1) HDMI connection and (1) RS-232 control port.
  • DTP Receiver Balun - each module shall mount an Extron DTP 230 Rx receiving balun.  This unit will be the terminating point of the Extron Digital Video Cable portion of the umbilical.  The receiver balun will route and connect directly to the projector using RS-232 protocol.  The HDMI signal will be taken and used to separate audio and video signals.
  • HDMI Audio De-Embedder - each module will mount an Extron HAE 100 audio de-embedder.  This unit will separate the audio signal from the video and provide it as an input to the audio amplifier.  The video will then be passed on using HDMI to the Ceiling Mounted Projector input.
  • Audio Amplifier - each module will mount an Extron MPA401, or similar equivalent, to connect to existing speakers in their respective rooms. Connection and control of audio levels will be supplied from the Lectern Umbilical RS-232 cable.  Connection to speakers will be done using existing cables.
  • Projector Mounting System - the projector mounting system will provide a stable platform for mounting of the ceiling projector.  This will include (1) suspended ceiling mounting bracket, (1) extension pole, (1) projector specific mounting adapter, and (1) suspended ceiling storage compartment.
  • Suspended Ceiling Mounting Bracket - Chief CMS-440
  • Extension Pole - Chief CMS006009
  • Projector Specific Mounting Adapter - Chief RSMx or RPMx brackets preferred for keyed locking
  • Suspended Ceiling Storage Compartment - Chief CMS-492
