Used batteries (including those from UPS backup units) constitute waste which must be disposed of properly. The following steps must be taken to properly dispose of battery e-waste.
Date the Battery – once taken out of service write the date on the battery with a permanent marker. At that point, the battery must be disposed of properly within 6 months of that date.
Used batteries should not be disposed of in the University trash but brought to a regional battery recycling center for disposal. Some centers offer cash value for batteries. If such a center is used for University-owned equipment, a cash receipt should be received and the proceeds deposited in an appropriate University account.
