A classroom of this configuration would likely include many of the technologies available currently in the Abbott Aviation Center distance room or Stebbins.  Full PTZ cameras, screens available for instructor to maximize interaction with students, document cameras, control interface to configure sources as needed, dedicated audio equipment, and high visibility whiteboards ideal for video.  Configured for use with Teams (or any video collaboration tool)

Pros:  Ability to maximize distance hybrid course interaction.  Capability for optimal visual and audio experiences.  Ability to automate startup for a "walk up an press on" experience.  Specifically designed control interface for interaction with components.

Cons: High cost and time to deploy.  Requires a very technology savvy faculty member to operate effectively.

(Best for larger rooms/lecture halls but could also be done in smaller ones)

NTS/USE - A room like this takes a lot of time and infrastructure resources to ensure proper configuration and operation.  Sourcing and delivery of equipment causes some time lag as well as any needed increase in network infrastructure to handle the added load/number of connections.

(Could reasonably expect to do 1 or 2 of these in a year with enough time/bandwidth - additional rooms could be done at additional cost with the use of outside AV contracting resources)

Basic current classroom configuration with addition of a controllable PTZ camera for use with whiteboards and classroom interaction.  Will require purchase additional control equipment and connections for use with Teams (or any video collaboration tool) Could also include dedicated microphone for instructor use.

Pros: Capability for improved visual control of course content in classrooms.  Lower cost than full hybrid while keeping of one of the main capabilities. (Bang for buck)

Cons: Will be less intuitive to use than with a specifically designed control interface.  Will need dedicated instructor microphone to work well.

(Best for normal classrooms)

NTS/USE - while most of the infrastructure is already in place, there would be some need for additional control cabling and network connections.

 

(3-4 of these in a summer would be reasonable unless outside contractor was engaged)

This configuration would essentially provide a webcam for each classroom that has the essential functions for using Teams (video, microphone).

Additionally, a specific mount could be added to facilitate using the primary webcam (or an additional secondary webcam) as a document camera where needed. Teams allows simple switching between multiple camera inputs from the instructor display.

Pros: Cost of entry is low.  Easiest to deploy in limited timeframe.

Cons: Quality of video is limited and depends heavily on faculty to manage camera location.  Camera location would be essentially fixed for the class. Audio quality is limited to webcam specs.

USE - no infrastructure increase needed.  This would be an exercise in purchasing and making sure there were enough webcams, extensions, and mini tripods.
