Connecting with MacOS

Body

Here we'll take a look at connecting a computer running Apple OS X to LetNet wireless.

Security Settings:
SSID: letnet (must be all lowercase)
Network Authentication: WPA2 (Enterprise)
Data Encryption: AES
Authentication Type: PEAP
802.1X: Enabled

The first step is to click on the wireless icon for the Apple Airport in the upper right corner, this is located next to the clock and spotlight search icon.  Then click on the network named "letnet".

This should bring up a user name and password prompt for connecting to LetNet.  Enter yourLetNet user name and password in the window and click "OK"

By this point, your wireless may have auto-configured your connection and already connected to LetNet.  If you have trouble getting to the registration page or the internet, you may need use some more advanced procedures to get your wireless connection working.

Advanced configuration and troubleshooting

If you are having trouble after the basic setup, these are some steps you can follow to make sure that your wireless connection has been setup properly.

Click on the Airport wireless icon and then click on "Open Network Preferences".  Then with the AirPort selected in the left window, click on the advanced button to the lower right.  Select the tab across the top that is labeled "802.1X" and select the 802.1X profile that was created for letnet (usually called "WPA: letnet").  Make sure that only "Peap" is checked in the Authentication list.

Next, click on the "AirPort" tab and select the network "letnet" from the list and click on the Edit icon that looks like a pencil.  Select the letnet 802.1X profile you edited in the last step from the drop down list (usually called "WPA: letnet") and click "Save", then click "OK" and then click "Apply".

You should now be able to authenticate and receive an IP address.  You should see under "802.1X: WPA: letnet" a message that says "Authenticated via PEAP" and another message above that says "AirPort is connected to letnet and has the IP address 10.xx.xx.xx".

Occasionally the client has issues with renewing or getting a new IP address, and you may see an IP address of 169.xx.xx.xx.  This can usually be solved by disabling and re-enabling DHCP.  To do this click on "Advanced" and then click on the "TCP/IP" tab.  Under Configure IPv4, select off and then click on "OK" and then click on "Apply".

Click on "Advanced" and "TCP/IP" again and select "Using DHCP" from the "Configure IPv4:" drop down list.  Click "OK" and "Apply" again.  You should now receive and IP address in the 10.xx.xx.xx range.
