Getting Started with Online Instruction

The following is a list of CDT Faculty-focused resources developed to help get you started with online instruction.
If you have any questions or need assistance with online instruction please contact our CDT Team at (903) 233-4070.

All current LETU courses and sections are automatically provisioned in Canvas (https://courses.letu.edu) at all times whether the class is an on-ground or online course.

Getting Started

Documents: For online teaching you will find it most convenient to store class-related documents in LETU's OneDrive Service instead of MyDocuments. Documents you store in OneDrive can be accessed from anywhere in the world and synced locally to multiple personal devices. Click the link below for more information on using OneDrive.
For questions about LETU's OneDrive service, please contact LETU's IT Helpdesk.

Email: In cases where you are instructing online and not from your office, you may not have a desktop version of Outlook installed. You may wish to familiarize yourself with the use of LETU Webmail or mobile-client-based email Apps as an alternative method of accessing email away from your primary office:
For questions about LETU's Email service, please contact LETU's IT Helpdesk.

Phone: In cases where you are instructing away from your main office for a period of time, you may wish to forward your office phone to a cell phone. Guidance for that is below.

Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams is a highly-flexible Chat, Video/Audio Conferencing, Chat and Desktop-sharing solution available to all LETU students, faculty and staff. Teams is the primary supported LETU collaboration solution for person-to-person conferencing. Instructional video recommendations in a class situation may vary based on your School - please consult CDT or your School leadership for current recommendations in a class setting. Microsoft Teams offers both ad-hoc/realtime and outlook-calendar-scheduled meetings and is a great great resource for daily collaboration and faculty/student interaction both in remote work situations and for office-to-office collaboration. It is equivalent in most respects to other similar solutions such as Zoom or WebEx conferencing.

Canvas and other Instructional Resources: LETU has a number of technology tools to directly facilitate online instruction. Two of the most important are Canvas and Panopto.
For questions about using Canvas & Panopto or other online instruction resources below please contact our CDT Team at (903) 233-4070.

Security: When working from home or another remote location it's vital to practice best security practices on your home network and equipment to avoid exposing yourself, your equipment, or LETU systems to risk.

Next Steps: Once you're satisfied with your access to the resources above, proceed to the resources below to add immersive video/audio conferencing and lecture capture resources to your instruction toolkit!

Video-based Instruction, Recording and Conferences

Both Canvas Conferences (Big Blue Button) and Panopto are supported for use within Canvas courses. Both provide video-based instruction and each offers different strengths.

  • Canvas Conferences provides real-time communication with all students in a class via audio/video/screenshare with the use of a webcam. Canvas Conference is not as full featured as Panopto and the recordings here are temporary and stored in Canvas 14 days at which point they are automatically deleted. There is not a way to download these recordings so for long-term use of recordings please use Panopto.
For questions about using Canvas Conferences below please contact our CDT Team at (903) 233-4070.
  • Panopto is easy to setup and great for pre-recorded lecture content which can be stored and reused on a long-term basis. While Panopto is preferable for recorded lectures, it is not suitable for real-time interaction as it has a minimum of a 5-minute delay when streaming content the first time.
For questions about using Canvas Conferences below please contact our CDT Team at (903) 233-4070.
  • Microsoft Teams is a highly-flexible Chat, Video/Audio Conferencing, Chat and Desktop-sharing solution available to all LETU students, faculty and staff. Teams is the primary LETU collaboration solution but is not directly integrated in Canvas. As a result, Canvas Conferences and Panopto remain more suitable for certain types of learning experiences that need to be deeply integrated into the Canvas learning management system. However, Microsoft Teams offers both ad-hoc/realtime and outlook-calendar-scheduled meetings and is a great great resource for daily collaboration and faculty/student interaction. It is equivalent in most respects to other similar solutions such as Zoom or WebEx conferencing.
